Funny that the one time Adam tried to not go deep on Omniture ("KPI pathing") he referenced something that GA actually *doesn't* do -- pathing!

It was good to hear the "what do you look for when you first see an implementation?" question. For me, I ask: 1) Send me the reports you look at regularly OR the analyses you have looked at most recently (more often than not...there are none), 2) describe who is responsible for reporting, analytics, and implementation -- names, where they are in the organization, and how much of their time is spent on that work (more often than not...it's 1-3 people who dabble on the side), 3) set me up with a login to the tool (I also snoop around site-side with Charles/Proxy or the Digital Pulse Debugger as appropriate to get a sense of whether they have any customizations, whether they're doing any onclick tracking, etc.). The challenge here is making sure our client teams that the data/access I'm asking for isn't because I'm going to dive in and analyze the data, but, rather, so I can get a handle on whether the client is doing that at all. IF the client is doing much on that front, then this exercise surfaces *who* is doing it, which, in turn, is who I want to be talking to directly.

As for why companies spend money on WA tools and then don't invest in the people, Avinash has been lamenting this for years -- it led to his 10/90 rule. Jenn nailed it, though (and I'll now extend) -- even a poorly implemented WA tool can spit out charts and graphs, and it can even spit out data that is "interesting." Just because marketers are being bludgeoned to "be data-driven" doesn't mean they know what that means. So, if they get a chart out of a tool and work that into a PPT deck, then they've effectively seen the emperor's clothes, whether they've really gotten value out of the data or not.

DudeA: "I want to track every time someone clicks on a picture on this page"

DudeB: "Why?"

DudeA: "Um, I dunno. It would be good to know."

DudeA: "Well, nothing. This isn't a very important page. I like the pictures. Those people probably don't buy my stuff. Have you got any cheese?"

The comments Jenn offer are superb. I particularly liked her statement on "I want to track..." and twisting it to "I want to test..." "I want to compare..." It's very insightful for encouraging the client to think more broadly than just tracking, to get to the heart of why a measurement should take place.

For those of you need the Regex: ^\s*[^\s]+(\s+[^\s]+){1,2}\s*$

That returns 2 and 3 word phrases.

Maybe Web Analytics needs to be a SRO (Self Regulating Organization) like the American Medical Association and the Realtors. We should regulate ourselves. If not, Congress will step in eventually.

Enjoyed the show guys. Question - Gary mentioned companies making advances in analytics data warehousing and rattled off a few vendor names - aster, quantivo and something that sounded like netteaser(??). What was that third name? Searched for near-spellings but wasn't finding anything. By the way, I reached out and started a conversation with Quantivo based on your previous broadcast. However they have decided to focus specifically on retailers (which I'm not), so am looking for a similar type of vendor - any thoughts?

Great show, very worthwhile, very enjoyable.

Thanks for another great podcast guys.

I don't agree with a lot of what was said but it was a very thought provoking interview.

I fear the day companies start hiring based on specific measure certifications, it's a lazy and dangerous practice. It is this mentality that has corrupted our institutions of higher learning. Our colleges are turning into degree producing factories where students primary motivation is getting a grade and ultimately a degree.

At the end of the day, if I pass the WAA Cert, all it means is I am good at passing the WAA cert, nothing less, nothing more.

Some really useful insight as I like many in analytics rarely work directly on paid search.

If you are looking for future podcast ideas I would love to hear similar viewpoints from other marketing disciplines, eg someone who is 100% dedicated to SEO or a leading email marketing specialist.

My favourite of your podcast series yet, very insightful to have someone so knowledgeable from inside Google.

Shame we couldn't tease out any future features of GA.

The 'black hole' comments surprise me, I have never found GA to give tangibly different results from the other major tools.

In this podcasts I could learn about the Forrester Web Analytics Wave. I am from Germany and only read in blogs about „CMS Watch“ or an german comparision called „Einkaufsführer Web Analytics“, so very interesting to know about the wave Report.

I have seen on the Forrester Website the last Wave (Q3 2009) with 8 Vendors. I like it, that you choose only 8 and get in Detail for those.

Best regards from Hamburg

Hi Gene, about your question on why GA is "free". Here is one way to look at it: the online marketing industry is still relatively young. To convince marketers to shift their offline to online spend, there need to be very good reasons. As an online advertising platform company, it is in Google's interest to help convince marketers that online advertising can be very accountable. There are many marketers who cannot afford certain solutions in the marketplace. GA tries to satisfy the measurement & reporting needs of these marketers. It also turns out that GA has been designed very well (IMHO) -- some enterprises also find GA more than meeting their measurement & reporting needs.

Hope that this helps.

- Phil

And no, I don't work for Omniture/Adobe....

I forgot to ask, what do you all think about the measurement industry now that GA is rolling out many similar functions offered by paid vendors like custom report by SiteCatalyst or WebTrend. Will Google have yet another Monopoly in the analytic space?

Why does Google provide Analytics for free? Is Google ethically right to provide such service? After all, the aggregate data of most website analytics should be measured and collected by someone who has no conflict of interest. Like Mui shared, Google has ad business that should raise question from Govt to step in and make sure Google's so-called end users' privacy effort is safely guarded. I can't help but to fear Google eventually will use all these data collected for something of their benefit.

Now back to the product itself. Aside from non-real time, GA's limited to Site-level metrics only in most of its reports. Furthermore, it can't segmentize visitors like the way SiteCatalyst does. However, SiteCatalyst is extremely expensive, though it is perhaps the most "relied" (not just used like GA) Analytical tools by major enterprises in the world.

Hi Brian, the capability I spoke about is something we're implementing at Webtrends for our own marketing programs. The first campaign to use these capabilities will go live in 2 weeks. There likely isn't much data about how to do this yet, although we will definitely post how we did it on our blog after the campaign launches.

In the mean time, you could research <a href="http://developers.facebook.com/docs/authentication/permissions" rel="nofollow">how extended permissions</a> work to get a sense of how you can pull in profile data from Facebook users. The project we're working on uses the access token we get from a user who grants us permission to pull FB profile data in order to pre-populate a form in a Facebook application.

Hope this helps!

Agreed great content. Can someone provide a link to further information on lead acquisition through a single click via Facebook? Justin mentioned such benefits (consumers not needing to fill out personal information every time) but I am struggling to find further useful information on this that entails the passing of the data.

I am not sure of the particulars on how to do this, but speak to Ed Hewitt at Omniture. He will know how.

This is a great podcast and I have listened to every episode so far. We use Omniture for our website analytics and we have been trying to figure out a way to filter out our employee mobile phone numbers from the mobile phone stats. It seemed that a solution exists which was lightly mentioned in the podcast. Would you mind providing me more details as to how this can be done (possibly within our existing Vista rule)?

Thank you,
Dave

Super podcast, probably best one yet. Why? Answered all the questions regarding Web Analytics without Borders, WAA and Certification. It's probably the first time where Rudi and the boys have been so quiet! Ha ha!

The info and advice provided by Stephane is so valuable, right from the start of his experiences dealing with I.T and developing the maturity model.

Well done guys on another super podcast!

If you have resources, you can double tag or even triple tag. But double tagging adds the workload of the analytic guy, monitoring data quality, and overseeing implementation of 2 tools, and not to mention he will have to answers questions like "why is my page's visits number are higher in GA? Which one should i trust? is this accurate at all? Then I will have to explain the whole concept of precision vs. accuracy.

Again, if resource is not an issue, why not.

We double tag on a number of sites, the clients like the quickness/ease of GA, we (the analysts) like the software version of WT, and find the Visitor centric Marketing Warehouse/deep dive analytics of WT, and all the good aspects of a full featured tool. Tagging was made easy for us by our use of XML, Tracking Classes in our flash, and Web Dev's that make it work in both.

I can clearly see the benefit of having different sets of tools for different audiences. However, this essentially doubles the effort of implementation and maintenance. If we have to implement 2 sets of codes, and still maintain adequate data integrity for 2 both systems, we would have to hire a lot more people to help, and headcounts is hard to get in this economy despite WA is a growing industry. A company that has multiple sites and web campaigns go out every week. How can this be scalable?

I have high respect for Eric. I am always the devils advocate, so I hope folks here don’t mind me just throwing my opinion out.

Great recap and a great summit this year. I could not agree more for the desire to extend SiteCatalyst to encompass more instant segmentation functionality. Lots of up-selling but can't blame them. How does Digital Pulse compare to ObservePoint?

Thx for recap. I did not attend this one but have attended before. Not sure if this is the best forum but, is there a list of things that u heard that people were looking for in the products. We use Insight and i am mainly interested in that but other product 'gaps' would also be good.

@Jason,

I also did not hear anyone at Summit try and "upsell" any of the offerings. There were many, many conversations about the strengths and weaknesses of various tools.

Jason,

I can appreciate your frustration, although I honestly didn't feel like any of the Insight conversations I heard were aggressive upsell attempts. I think the key thing to keep in mind is that there are simply some things that Insight does extremely well (in particular, multichannel analytics). It's important to recognize the distinction between "upsell" and merely talking about a tool's strengths. Insight is a new tool to many Summit attendees; obviously, we can't just not talk about a tool that may provide significant value to many simply because it has powerful features and a price tag.

Thanks,
Ben Gaines

Nice summary, with much more steak than sizzle. :)

Disappointed but not surprised to hear that Omniture is continuing the same old up-sell game from Discover to Insight. It was nice to hear though that they are finally getting around to fixing the basic SC product and achieving parity with the other solutions out there.

I can understand working with smaller teams and on many sites utilizing the URLs, html layout and other elements to infer values to report to web analytics is the quickest way to get an implementation up, but don't you find that your implementation will just degrade from then on as the web team makes changes?

utilizing page titles is vary problematic as soon as any SEO efforts are put in place. utilizing URL structures can also cause problems as the website changes over time. many sites use different products for different parts of their sites.

for larger more enterprise sites, the best way to implement is to have the pages output web analytics values in javascript that are not related to URLs, pagenames or design elements which often change without the web analytics team being made aware until AFTER a reporting problem has started.

P.S. I should add two notes though:

1. One of the most interesting outcomes from creating the wizards was to realize that a web analytics solutions by itself is far from being sufficient for web business insights. For example, if traffic to your site is down is that because you did something wrong or is traffic to your competitors also down? ==> You need more than web analytics to answer that critical question.

2. While most web analytics solutions will enable you to create the analytics proposed in the wizard you may need the vendors' advanced ad-hoc anlaysis modules in addition to the basic reporting module. Unless you are using a solution where both are available as part of a single solution. 8-)

While most web analytics solutions will enable you to create the analytics proposed in the wizard you may need the vendors’ advanced ad-hoc anlaysis modules in addition to the basic reporting module. Unless you are using a solution where both are available as part of a single solution.

Hi Dawn and Rudi,

Good news: the wizards shoudl be suitable for any vendor's web analytics solution. Have a look at http://MultichannelMetrics.com/wizards and see the bird's eye view flow charts.

Depending on the package that you use for web analytics you will create the related analytics in one way or other. But hopefully most tools should support most recommendations in one way or other.

Keep me posted please how it goes. You can add your own thoughts and comments at each step of the wizard.

Big, big, thanks to Rudi, James, and Adam for the chance to participate in a beyond web analytics podcast!

Thank you for listening and thank you for your comments.

Can you provide a little more detail about your environment? Vendor Name, types of analysis you would like to do, etc.

I listened to this podcast, I am always hopeful that you and your guests would give some real solutions to problems we face. We use a package from a large vendor and that requires a great deal of overhead to support. Would love to have some tools to help doing analysis, the wizards discussed would be intriguing if they can work on this vendors data, but I suspect not. Can the next podcast focus on solutions the community can use instead of just dialogue on what we already know, web analytics is hard, complicated and there are limited tools.

What a great podcast with some great advice especially on the stance of WAA and the rest of the world. It was great to hear Jim say "You have to make it what you want it to be" which I completely agree with. People who enjoy web analytics need to start doing things whilst they can and have the opportunity to help define and establish web analytics in their own regions.

Great stuff, keep up the great work!!

Thanks for the Bango mention Greg. You are correct that user ID is the crucial aspect in accurate mobile measurement, without that the remaining metrics fall down. Cookies, IP addresses and subscriber ID's (MSISDN, Sub Number etc) all have their problems and should not be relied on alone. Cookies are simply unreliable on mobile while a mobile subscriber ID / MSISDN is great for recording visitors on the carrier network but does not cope with WiFi. Which is crucial given the frequency at which consumers switch network connections on their smartphones these days.

The Bango platform solves this by placing a layer above all these methods - which provides a consistent visitor ID for tracking while also leveraging all the best physical IDs below. It's your shared key across all platforms, sessions, connections, devices etc you mentioned. This is one way in which we deliver our 8x accuracy, our industry partnerships is another.

Best recommendation to anyone is to try us out at http://bango.com/analytics.

Great podcast guys, I particularly loved Kevin's tip on setting up a Google Alert on s_code updates.

To be a thorough discussion of implementation validation tools, your listeners may also want to evaluate our solution SiteAudit.
Great podcast. We have been an Omniture client for the past 3 years; started with Site Catalyst and have been working with the T&T team over a year now. The tests we did together not only gave us the highest site conversion rates and increased lead numbers but also won us a Gold Ribbon award for best lead generation test. This year my goal is to run at least 1 test a month on our sites. Currently working on the plan where we lay out our business goals, take it to site goals level and determine how testing will contribute to that, and I'm really looking forward to that.
If you read Avinash Kaushik's Web 2.0 book or if you are familiar with the concept of an analytics continuum; starting with click stream analysis then moving on to testing, then to gathering customer's voice and competitive intelligence to reach the "insight" that will help impact business decisions ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMwQN43fwoQ (Min 18:44)); it's only natural that click stream analysis and testing build upon each other. I have a premonition that not very soon Omniture will start offering bundled packages of analytics and testing. :)

Hi Bhargava,

Thanks for the question. What I would recommend is starting off with an A/B test to find out which design is optimal across the segments of traffic that come to the site. Once you have a winner from the A/B test, I would follow up with an MVT campaign to find out why a particular design won over the others. The results of your MVT will also provide a nice opportunity to apply the learnings to other areas of the site.

Without knowing what the differences in the designs are, I would include all the KPI's that you think can be affected by these different experiences. Since this is an e-commerce site I would include conversions, AOV, RPV, and total sales but also maybe repeat visits, page views, and time on site.

Thanks again Bhargava,

Hi Brian,

If I were to start A?B or MVT for a website, which would be the starting point (for a e-commerce site). I am seeking this clarification as i need to compare diff designs. Like, will we be able to set up some KPIs for test that we conduct?

Thanks,
Bhargava

Really enjoyed this episode, it covered a lot of ground. As someone who handles WA soup-to-nuts at my organization (in addition to non-WA responsibilities), I could really identify with this topic. We recently migrated ~30 sites from HBX to SiteCatalyst, and the comments about complexities of the tools resonated. Made me feel good about all we've accomplished so far, given time constraints, etc.

Great episode! Interesting and relevant to my organization's reporting/analysis efforts and challenges. I've recommended it to my managers and colleagues. We have recently merged staff who do WA and other business reporting into the same unit, which I think is a good thing for us.
